AutoCAD History

AutoCAD was first developed by Frank Heuer and Wes Townley, a pair of system engineers from Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI). Prior to the introduction of the Visualizer, most CAD software required users to draw on printed sheets of paper which had to be later scanned in, a process that could be time-consuming and difficult.

Townley and Heuer initially worked for the graphic software company Silvaco in the early 1980s. In the course of building a 3D rendering system, Townley and Heuer discovered that it was possible to animate objects in a 3D space using a primitive application they called the “Visualizer.”

Silvaco had a relationship with the SGI division, including a patent agreement that would have allowed SGI to obtain exclusive licensing rights for the visualizer. Townley and Heuer disagreed with the terms, and instead attempted to sell the visualizer to SGI and Imageworks. SGI and Imageworks were not interested in Townley and Heuer’s technology, and instead attempted to acquire it from Silvaco. Silvaco believed this would be impossible, so Townley and Heuer left the company.

After leaving Silvaco, Townley, Heuer, and SGI formed a new company called Visualix, where Townley and Heuer developed the Visualizer. It was first offered as an add-on for the SGI/Imageworks Visualizer, which was later bundled with the Imagenet Visualizer.

Catherine of Saint Petersburg (30 January 1578 – 4 January 1607), was a Russian noblewoman, the Duchess consort of Holstein-Gottorp, Princess consort of Jülich-Berg and Duchess consort of Courland and Semigalia.


Early life

Catherine was the third daughter of Tsar Ivan IV, and the only surviving daughter of his second wife, Anastasia Romanovna. Her paternal grandfather was Ivan the Terrible, and her maternal grandfather was Tsar Vasily III of Russia.

In 1600, Catherine was betrothed to the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, Augustus, who was the son of Duke Henry of Saxe-Lauenburg and a grandson of King John III of Denmark and Norway. On 5 March 1601, the official engagement took place in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the second day of the feast of the Epiphany. The betrothal was held in the presence of the Tsar and Empress Anastasia, and took place at the Menshikov Palace. Two days later, the wedding was celebrated in the same building. The wedding was attended by the Tsar and his sons Alexis and Fedor, the Empress, the Tsaritsa Natalya (a niece of the groom), Tsaritsa Elizabeth (a sister of the groom) and by the most notable Russian officials and churchmen.

The bride’s dowry included the cities of Dorpat (Tartu) and Revel (Reval) in Livonia, the counties of Delisle and Pont-à-Mousson, and the city of Kraków (Cracow) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The total value of the dowry was valued at 300,000 roubles, with a further 600,000 to be paid in gold and silver.
